The Perfect Trip, Yah Right!

November 13th, 2007

When my father used to drive us to Maine on vacation, it took six hours before the Maine turnpike came into existence. That must have been a joy for my folks as my brother and I were the passengers and usually bored with the long drive. There are a few trips that stand out in my mind as the most eventful. On one trip my brother had a collapsible metal cup full of milk, and of course it collapsed and got milk all over my father’s new Homburg hat. Another time my brother had whooping cough, and since my father only had two weeks vacation, he went along and coughed and vomited the whole way.
There was a hamburger stand we always stopped at, and for hours previously we bugged my father for a “nice sizzly hamburger with french fries” which probably drove Dad out of his mind as he heard it so often. It was also very annoying to me that my brother feigned sleep rather than talk to me, so I was always complaining to my folks to make him stay awake. The joys of taking a trip with children!
