Setting Up A Wireless Network - Common Issues

February 4th, 2008

Wireless networks are wonderful things. But only when they work. I am into computers and have been since childhood. I am always getting phone calls from friends, family, (and sometimes people I haven't seen for years) asking if I can help them out with their computer issues. These range from all sorts of things but one of the most common ones is from those who are having problems setting up a wireless network. The trouble with wireless networking is that although there have been vast improvements it is still a little unstable. Your network may be working fine one minute and then not working at all the next. There is usually a fairly simple solution but not always user friendly. However, the best place to start (assuming your router settings are all correct) is with your firewall. This is the number one cause of head-aches when it comes to setting up a wireless network.
