Depression - a Disturbing Medical Condition

April 28th, 2008

One of the most disabling of medical conditions is depression because it is not a normal human condition; there is however, more than one kind of this condition, just to make the situation more complicated. The cause is often (but not always) about issues that have not been rectified; naturally almost anyone can become depressed about certain aspects of their life. People who are depressed require specialized medical help with their condition and should seek it at an early stage; it is also important to discover just what the cause of depression was in the fist place.

It is difficult going through life and not experiencing sadness or feeling low but these things normally pass in time; this is not an indication of a medical condition, just normal human behavior because depression is something else entirely.

Probably the most likely cause is stress, often owing to family or other relationship problems which for one reason or another cannot be readily solved; when these issues cannot be resolved and cause high levels of stress, it is not uncommon for this condition to follow.

Problems have a tendency to multiply when they are not corrected and this is very true with this particular condition; as a consequence sufferers make themselves ill with worry which may appear as a physical illness but will more than likely appear as a mental condition.

Often the problem stems from a situation in the workplace which is unresolved or ongoing; it is not uncommon for this condition to result in panic attacks, so outside help is often needed to end the situation. The situation can become so bad that some people are barely able to function either at home or at work; when they become so unhappy they cannot face even going to work a professional must intervene to end the mental conflict. There are times where a person has been prescribed medication for an illness, for example, and a side effect caused by the chemicals in the medication is depression; these can produce symptoms and feelings that almost identical to a person who has emotional issues.

In these circumstances the person's doctor should be made aware of any changes in mood so appropriate action can be taken. One of the biggest problems is where the symptoms of depression do not seem to have any cause that can be discovered; when they don't seem to have any cause that can be identified as the reason for the problem, medical staff will have to research the patient further.

Cases like this usually mean that the person does not recognize the cause of the problem themselves; if they cannot associate the cause with their condition then the way forward is made very hard.

One type of is called Manic Depression although the correct term is Bipolar Disorder; it can actually take up to five years to get the diagnosis correct! Whatever the cause, getting help is the most important thing but the sufferer should be willing to take up responsibility and get the necessary help. Just making that first move can make all the difference and enable the patient to feel as if they are making appositive move towards their treatment; if it is having a detrimental affect on your life then once something positive is done there will be a sense of relief which is the first step to becoming cured.
