One can reduce duration and severity of shingles if proper treatment is taken on time. There are certain antiviral drugs which can be used to reduce the severity roofers of such an attack. The immediate treatment offered by doctors includes some antiviral medications like famcyclovir or valcyclovir. Painful after effects of shingles is called postherpetic neuralgia and antiviral drugs can keep such painful experience at bay.
If one suffers from post-therpetic neuralgia, the medicines like antidepressants, topical agents, anticonvulsants and steroids are given. One can reduce the chances of such viral attack if one is vaccinated at an old age or when the immune system is likely to get weak.
